OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)
The OPAL programme rationale is that “better, more active and creative playtimes can mean happier and healthier children, and having happier, healthier, more active children usually results in a more positive attitude to learning in school, with more effective classroom lessons, less staff time spent resolving unnecessary behavioural problems, fewer playtime accidents, happier staff and a healthier attitude to life.”
At Bridlewood Primary School, we believe that play is a fundamental part of every child’s learning journey. After all, up to 20% of the school day is dedicated to playtime. That is why we are excited to be at the beginning of our OPAL journey. We are committed to developing high-quality play opportunities that enrich our school environment and provide engaging, creative and stimulating spaces for exploration, imagination and growth.
OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) is built on the belief that children learn best when they are actively engaged, challenged and inspired in an open-air environment. The programme enhances opportunities for physical activity, social interaction and overall development through improved play provision. By strengthening our approach to play, we aim to nurture cooperation, coordination, resilience, creativity, imagination and, most importantly, enjoyment.
Through imaginative play, exploration and collaboration, our children will become more active and deeply engaged during lunchtime. OPAL encourages them to take appropriate risks, solve problems and work together, giving them the freedom to become motivated and enthusiastic builders, engineers, explorers, designers and creators. These meaningful play experiences support not only physical development, but also confidence, wellbeing and a lifelong love of learning.
As we begin this exciting journey, we look forward to seeing our pupils learn, grow and thrive through the power of play, and to watching the positive impact OPAL has across our whole school community.
